Volunteer Coaches Needed

The neighborhood needs coaches.

SF Fog FC is building something from scratch. We need people who care more about kids than trophies. No coaching experience required — just show up ready to learn.

SFYS Intent to Play opens in ~30 days. Certifications take 2-3 weeks. Start now.
01 — Why Coach at SF Fog FC

Build the club you wish existed.

Most youth soccer clubs are already built. Rosters are set, politics are entrenched, and new coaches get the leftovers. SF Fog FC is different — we're starting fresh, which means you get to shape something real.

Neighborhood roots

Coach kids from your own community. No cross-city commutes, no strangers — your neighbors, your pitch.

Development over wins

We care about touches on the ball, not tournament trophies. Build players who love the game for life.

We cover the hard part

League registration, field permits, insurance — the club handles logistics. You focus on the players.

02 — Certification Checklist

What you need to get on the pitch.

SFYS and NorCal require certified coaches. The process is straightforward — mostly online, mostly free. Budget 2-3 weeks to complete everything.

03 — Age Groups & Game Formats

Pick your age group.

Each age group plays a different format. Your grassroots certification should match.

4v4
Ages 7-8 (U8)

Cert: Grassroots 4v4

Small-sided, no goalkeepers. Maximum touches, maximum fun. Perfect for first-time coaches.

7v7
Ages 9-10 (U10)

Cert: Grassroots 7v7

Introduce positions and basic tactics. Players start to "see" the field. Build-out lines encourage playing from the back.

9v9
Ages 11-12 (U12)

Cert: Grassroots 9v9

Transition to the full game. Formations matter. Players develop positional awareness and team shape.

11v11
Ages 13-18 (U14+)

Cert: Grassroots 11v11

Full field, full squad. Tactical depth, set pieces, match management. The complete game.

🏆

Going Competitive? Consider the D License.

The USSF D License is recommended for U14+ coaches and required for NorCal competitive leagues (Cal South National Cup, California Regional League). Prerequisites: complete all 4 grassroots modules first. Cost: $150-$250, delivered in-person over 2-3 days. Allow 1 month lead time for scheduling. Not required for recreational SFYS coaching.
