SF Fog FC is building something from scratch. We need people who care more about kids than trophies. No coaching experience required — just show up ready to learn.
Most youth soccer clubs are already built. Rosters are set, politics are entrenched, and new coaches get the leftovers. SF Fog FC is different — we're starting fresh, which means you get to shape something real.
Coach kids from your own community. No cross-city commutes, no strangers — your neighbors, your pitch.
We care about touches on the ball, not tournament trophies. Build players who love the game for life.
League registration, field permits, insurance — the club handles logistics. You focus on the players.
SFYS and NorCal require certified coaches. The process is straightforward — mostly online, mostly free. Budget 2-3 weeks to complete everything.
Create your account at the US Soccer Learning Center. Complete the "Introduction to Coaching" module — a short video overview of grassroots coaching philosophy.
Complete the grassroots module for your age group: 4v4, 7v7, 9v9, or 11v11. Available online or in-person. This is the core coaching certification required by all SF youth leagues.
Two online courses: "Introduction to Safe & Healthy Learning Environments" (concussion awareness) and SafeSport certification (abuse prevention). Both are required for every rostered adult.
Online form plus optional in-person fingerprinting. SFYS requires its own background check — checks from other organizations (SFUSD, etc.) don't transfer.
Total estimated cost: $95 – $200 | Total time: 2-3 weeks if courses are available; up to 4-6 weeks if waiting for in-person slots. Start now to be certified before the June deadline.
Each age group plays a different format. Your grassroots certification should match.
Cert: Grassroots 4v4
Small-sided, no goalkeepers. Maximum touches, maximum fun. Perfect for first-time coaches.
Cert: Grassroots 7v7
Introduce positions and basic tactics. Players start to "see" the field. Build-out lines encourage playing from the back.
Cert: Grassroots 9v9
Transition to the full game. Formations matter. Players develop positional awareness and team shape.
Cert: Grassroots 11v11
Full field, full squad. Tactical depth, set pieces, match management. The complete game.
The USSF D License is recommended for U14+ coaches and required for NorCal competitive leagues (Cal South National Cup, California Regional League). Prerequisites: complete all 4 grassroots modules first. Cost: $150-$250, delivered in-person over 2-3 days. Allow 1 month lead time for scheduling. Not required for recreational SFYS coaching.
Fill this out and we'll get you started on certification. No commitment yet — just tell us you're interested.
